Chicago´s Wicker Park
The
Neighborhood
Wicker Park is a wonderfully diverse, dynamic neighborhood with a rich history and currently, home to one of the largest working-artist population in the country.
Originally, Wicker Park was a small four acre triangular park located between Damen Avenue and Wicker Park Avenue. It was donated to the city in 1870 by the brothers Charles and Joel Wicker. The park and surrounding streets are still lined with beautiful "Victorian-era" architecture that was typical of Chicago around the time of the Fire of 1871. Pierce and Hoyne streets reflect some of the city´s most grand examples of the period. These streets were also populated by a large number of brewery owners and later became known as "Beer Baron Row".
In the 1960´s Wicker Park attracted Latino immigrants and during the last decade or so, became home to artist, yuppies, and non traditionalist. Today, people of all nationalities, religions, ages and incomes help to shape the unique character of this vibrant and exciting community.
Wicker Park, architecture is late nineteenth century, with rehabbing and new development occurring everywhere. In recent years, the area has become one of the city´s hottest real estate markets. Together, the sister neighborhoods of Wicker Park and Bucktown feature some of Chicago´s finest restaurants, clubs bars, coffee shops and unusual artisan-owned galleries and boutiques. Often times it´s referred to the new Grenage Village but Wicker Park is not as crowded as New York City.
Both Wicker Park and Bucktown are conveniently located on the Chicago Transit Authority´s (CTA)
Blue Line. An array of buses makes it easy to get around town. The Blue Line and the subway trains running from Chicago´s O´Hare International Airport to the Loop pass through the center of the Wicker Park neighborhood.
