Chicago´s Bucktown

the

Neighborhood

Bucktown was designed by the architect Daniel Burnham in the 1890s and named for the goats kept in the backyards of its early residents. During the past decade, it has been transforming from its earlier blue-collar, primary Polish roots into a conveniently located, upscale-artsy neighborhood.

The community is proud of its mix of nationalities and demographics. Along the streets of Bucktown you will find a combination of old and new, trendy and gritty, American, Latin and Eastern European, and more. It is this unique and spirited mix that no doubt prompted MTV´s The Real World to choose a centrally located building in Bucktown to call home for the Chicago season of its series.

Additionally, Bucktown and Wicker Park boast more artist than any other area in the Midwest, including an artist colony called Gallery Point. This Chicago neighborhood also host, the Bucktown Arts Fest, attracting over 30,000 visitors to the area every August. The Around the Coyote Festival occurs every September in celebration of the neighborhood´s creative spirit.

Damen Avenue is the neighborhood´s main thoroughfare, and it seems every street in Bucktown has its own neighborhood bar. A thriving night life also has provided the area with a higher-than-average ratio of hip bars, clubs, posh restaurants, and shopping opportunities galore.

Buying a home in Bucktown can mean anything from a vintage cottage to a new-construction condominium. Bucktown real estate includes rehabbed lofts, townhouse developments and unique, luxury single-family homes constructed side-by-side with the classic Victorian-style pre-existing houses that lend to the preserving the old-time feeling of the neighborhoods.

The El is located at North Damen and Milwaukee avenues. CTA buses run on Ashland, Damen, Western and Armitage.

It should be noted the differentiation between Bucktown and Wicker Park are hazy, at best, and where one begins and the other ends depends entirely on who you ask!
